Orlistat works by blocking the enzyme that breaks down the fat in your diet. The undigested fat passes out of your body through your bowel movement. This medication does not block the absorption of calories from sugar and other non-fat foods, so you still need to restrict your total intake of calories.

  • If your doctor has prescribed this medicine, read all the patient information leaflet that is available from your pharmacist before you start taking orlistat. Take this medicine as directed by your doctor, by mouth with liquid sometime during each meal that consists of fat or within 1 hour after the meal, usually 3 times daily.

  • Drug interaction may vary how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Get together all the products you use including prescriptions/nonprescription drugs and herbal products and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Try not to stop, start, or change the dosage of any medicines without your doctor’s approval.
  • Some products that might interact with this include blood thinners such as warfarin, HIV medications such as atazanavir, efavirenz, lopinavir, emtricitabine, ritonavir, tenofovir.
